22 Days Nutrition: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Dione Mason: Hello, my name is Dione Mason. I’m a Spiritual Being with intellect who is positively passionate about life. Housed in this physical body, I strive to inspire others to achieve their life’s purpose. Born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, I have a busy and fulfilling career in the Health and Fitness Industry. Although, I spend my days caring for the wellness of others, I have been guilty of taking care of everyone else, but myself. I generally have good habits, but during the last holiday season, I engaged in a bit too much “holiday cheer” J and gained 10 pounds. I resolved to get back on track in January 2016.
22 Days: How long have you been following the 22 Days Vegan principles?
DM: I did the full 22 days without compromising. Even though I’m technically finished, the habits have stuck with me. I’ve adjusted my nutritional plan to only include 20% animal protein (i.e. only 5 meals per week will include animal protein). From someone who is a meal eater and would include animal protein at EVERY MEAL, this is truly a revolution.
22 Days: Tell us a little bit about your average day now that you’re following a plant-based diet.
DM: I love to start my day with a green smoothie. It gives me amazing energy..waaay more than a coffee. For lunch, I love the great salad choices. Some of my favourites are the Cucumber/Carrot/ Zucchini salad or Tomato/Avocado salad. For dinner, when I’m on a meatless day, I love the Vegetable Curry, Veggie burgers or Quinoa with vegetables. Other days, I would combine fish with vegetables to maintain easy digestion. I haven’t gone back to red meat or poultry as yet as I like the light and energetic feeling I have after a meal. I may on occasion treat myself in the future, but for now light animal protein for just a few meals feels good.
22 Days: How has following a 22 Days Vegan Challenge impacted your life?
DM: I have been introduced to a way of life I never thought I could realistically do. I noticed right away my increased energy levels, alertness, better sleep and just feeling all around better about myself. I always thought living a vegan life was time consuming and difficult due to the lack of food options and ways to get protein, but I was wrong. In addition, I expected to be hungry all the time on this program. In fact the suggested portions were very filling causing me on many occasions to put down my fork when I reached satiation. Plus, the rich nutrients in each meal really satisfied my hunger, rather than many of the meals I had in the past which were “empty calories”.
22 Days: What health improvements have you seen?
DM: On the final day of the challenge, I was down 15lbs. So I lost my “holiday cheer” weight and then some. J However, even though I’m officially off the 22-day challenge, I still follow most of the principles and am still seeing loss. To date I’ve lost 17.2lbs. As mentioned before, I have increased mental alertness, more energy, better sleep and I do see more glow in my skin.
22 Days: What words of encouragement do you have for others who are getting started or are considering a 22 Days Vegan Challenge?
DM: In the words of Nike – Just do it! Often our biggest issue isn’t the action; it’s our inner fear of possible pain. Too many of us would rather avoid pain, than pursue pleasure. Following this program wasn’t painful at all. Even my Partner (who at first was skeptical) willingly did it with me when he saw all the delicious meals I was making, and bragged to his coworkers about the benefits we were both experiencing. It required discipline, planning and refocus, but the benefits far outweighed any mild discomfort of having to readjust some habits.
22 Days: Anything else you’d like to share?
DM: I have a Caribbean background and was brought up in a very “carnivore” intense environment, rich with fried, salty foods and sweets. Vegetables – if any – were few, overcooked and often put on the plate as decoration (i.e. 2 slices of tomato and 1 leaf of iceberg lettuce drowning in a creamy high sugar, high fat sauce). Our plate was often over packed and we were always scolded, “finish your plate, there are children starving in Africa!” This consistent message from childhood caused me to overeat and I had an obesity problem in my early adulthood. Even though I began retraining my habits after college, I would often resort back to that way of eating. I’ve tried many programs like Atkins, Paleo, The Master Cleanse, etc. and have never felt this good and fulfilled. I was skeptical, especially when reading you can lose up to 22 pounds in 22 days, as all programs brag about fast weight loss. Also, as a Fitness Professional, I didn’t think losing weight that quickly was healthy. But when I actually experienced the results, I couldn’t believe it, especially since I was eating good meals, wasn’t starving, counting calories or having to measure portions.
