5 Tips For Jumping Back Into Healthy Habits

January is nearly over - how are you doing on your New Year’s Resolutions? If you’ve fallen off track, you’re not alone. Rather than wait for January 1st to come around again, hit the reset button and reboot now. So, how do you find the motivation to begin again, and keep going? We have some suggestions:

Tip #1: Re-evaluate Goals

Many people set themselves up for failure simply by setting expectations too high, being unrealistic, or trying to accomplish something too quickly.  Inevitably, these people hit a roadblock and quickly abandon their plans.

Rather than give up entirely, you’ll need to start by setting new goals. For larger goals, try breaking them up into smaller, easier-to-digest goals. For example, if your goal is to lose 20 pounds, start with the goal to lose 5 pounds and then use that momentum to lose the next 5 and so on.

Tip #2: Set Small Steps

Small accomplishments help to motivate you onto larger ones. It could be running one mile as part of a marathon, losing one inch, going one week of “healthy” eating. Plus, if you end up off track you don’t have to start the year over, just the week.

Tip #3: Scale Up to Larger Goals

Once you’ve had a few smaller accomplishments, you can start working your way up to larger goals, leading to your initial resolution. One run per week can become two or three, healthy breakfasts can transition into healthy lunches and dinners. Take it easy, if you try to do too much too fast you might end up hurting yourself or having to give up.

Tip #4: Find Friends

Probably the one thing that holds people back from accomplishing their goals is the fact that they try go it alone. Finding a group that you can share your triumphs and tribulations with can make all the difference. Even if it’s just an online group, Facebook group, email chain with friends and family, any type of communication can help you stay on track.

Tip #5: Brush off Setbacks

Don’t let small sidesteps derail your plans, or guilt prevent you from moving forward. No one is perfect, and neither are you. The sooner you move on, the quicker you can get back to your goals. Also, take a moment (before moving on) to analyze why you’ve had a setback – whether it’s stress, too difficult of a goal, etc. This can help you prevent it from happening again.

Above all, continue moving forward. Celebrate your successes (no matter how small) and brush defeat aside. In no time at all your new habits will fall into place and you’ll feel the new you take shape.
